History & Background
Montezuma Falls, located on the southern tip of Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, is a famous three-tier waterfall known for its dramatic cliffs, natural swimming pools, and jungle trails. The falls became popular in the 1970s when Montezuma transformed from a quiet fishing village into a backpacker hub rich with eco-tourism, wildlife, and adventure activities. Over the decades, Montezuma Falls has remained one of the most visited natural attractions in the region, drawing travelers seeking a mix of exploration, swimming, and iconic waterfall views.
How to Get to Montezuma Falls by Car (From Montezuma Town)
Start in Montezuma’s main town center, near the beachfront.
Drive south along the main road toward Calle de la Cascada (also known as Waterfall Road).
Continue until you reach the parking area near the river, where signs mark the trailhead for Montezuma Falls.
Park in the designated lot or along the road. From here, the hiking trail begins just a short walk upstream.
The drive takes less than 5 minutes, making the falls one of the most accessible attractions in the area.
The Hike to Montezuma Falls
The hike to Montezuma Falls is adventurous, scenic, and suitable for most visitors willing to navigate natural terrain:
The main trail follows the Montezuma River, requiring rock-hopping and balancing across uneven stones.
Expect a 15–25 minute hike to reach the lower waterfall, depending on river flow and your comfort level with rocky paths.
Along the way, you’ll pass shallow pools, tropical plant life, and shaded jungle canopy.
The lower falls feature a stunning vertical drop into a deep natural pool—perfect for swimming, cooling off, and taking photos.
From here, skilled hikers can continue to the middle and upper waterfalls using a steeper side trail or via the official Sun Trails entrance, which offers bridges and railings.
This video captures views of all waterfall levels from above, giving you a rare aerial perspective of the canyon and rainforest.
