FULL SPEECH: Von der Leyen and Costa Push Arctic Security as Trump Backs Down on Greenland | AC1Z

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union had been “firm but non-escalatory” in its response to recent U.S. pressure over Greenland, as EU leaders met for an emergency summit in Brussels.

Von der Leyen said the EU has underinvested in Arctic security and confirmed that the European Commission will soon propose a major investment package for Greenland, the semi-autonomous territory of Denmark. She also stressed the need to deepen cooperation with the United States and regional partners, including boosting defence spending on Arctic-ready equipment such as European icebreakers.

EU Council President Antonio Costa welcomed Washington’s decision not to impose new tariffs on Europe, calling it positive for transatlantic trade relations. However, he warned the EU would defend its interests, companies and citizens against any form of coercion if necessary.

EU leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working with the United States on global challenges, including Ukraine and Gaza, while signalling a growing push toward greater European strategic independence following the Greenland dispute.
