‘The Lord ‘Living the Law’ Lesson 9, Q3 Sabbath School 2025,

Welcome to the next episode in our Exodus series! In this video, we wrestle with the complex laws God gave to Israel beyond the 10 commandments, and examine some of the most challenging questions about justice, compassion, and God’s character.
First, we ask: Why did God give so many laws apart from the 10 Commandments? These additional laws were designed to organize society, protect the vulnerable, and guide everyday relationships. They covered issues of justice, property, worship, family, and personal responsibility—responding to the real-life situations of people living in ancient Israel.

Next, we tackle a tough question: Are some of God’s laws questionable, like Exodus 21:7, which discusses selling a daughter? In its cultural context, this law was meant to protect poor families and vulnerable women. Often, a daughter was betrothed into a wealthier household as a wife or daughter-in-law, not as a slave. The law required that she be treated with dignity, given marital rights, and protected from exploitation. If she was mistreated, she could be redeemed or go free—considered progressive compared to practices in surrounding societies at the time.

We then address another challenge: How is God’s care for life and order consistent with commands for the Israelites to conquer the Canaanites? These commands appear harsh, but in their historical setting, they reflected God’s judgment on nations known for violence, injustice, and idolatry over generations. The process was also about establishing Israel in the land God promised, creating space for a society built upon the principles of justice and mercy found in the laws.
