England win Cricket World Cup after super-over drama against New Zealand

England have won the Cricket World Cup for the first time after a thrilling victory over New Zealand at Lord’s in a match that had to be settled by a super over.

After winning the toss and opting to bat Kane Williamson’s New Zealand side yet England a victory total of 242, Henry Nicholls top scoring with 55 and Tom Latham adding a useful 47 lower down the order. Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett took three wickets apiece.


England scored 15 off the six balls and New Zealand had to score 16 to get their World Cup dreams come true. But New Zealand managed to score only 15 as England won on the basis of the number of boundaries each team had hit during the match.



England looked deep in trouble when they were reduced to 86 for four by some expert bowling but a superb century partnership from Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler wrestled back the initiative, and Stokes’s dramatic, unbeaten 84 forced the super over.



Ben Stokes, the villain of 2016 at the Eden Gardens, redeemed himself to singlehandedly clinch the title for England with an unbeaten knock of 84 first in chase of 242 and then eight in the one-over eliminator. Set 16, Martin Guptill and James Neesham got the equation down to 2 off 1. Guptill was run out on the final ball of the game with scores tied as England won on the boundary count - stroking nine more than their opponents. What an end!


Eoin Morgan: I'd like to commiserate Kane and his team. The example that they lead is hugely commendable to him and his team. On a tough wicket where everyone found it tough to score. Buttler and Stokes put together a partnership, and I thought that would take us deep, and it did. This has been a four-year- journey– and we find it hard to play on wickets like that. To get over the line today means the world to us. I was being cooled down by Plunkett, which isn't a good sign. Some of the support staff - not only the best in our team, but in the world, they really helped. Full credit to the two boys who went out for the superover, given that they were there most recently. Archer just improves every time he goes out there. Really incredible - everyone in the changeroom today, Willey, Billings, whoever missed out on the squad – I'd like to mention them too.

Kane Williamson is the Player of the Tournament! Kane Williamson: It certainly wasn't one extra run. There were so many small parts of the match that could've gone either way. But congratulations to England! It's been challenging. The pitches have been a little bit different. There were talks out 300+plus scores, but we hardly saw that. Congratulations to all the New Zealand players for fighting hard all the way to the final. Pretty tough to swallow at this stage, but fantastic effort all around. We were obviously weighing on the overheads, and not just the pitch. As it proved, it proved challenging. In a World Cup final, perhaps 250 proves enough. It was a fantastic game of cricket.
