A few years ago, I learned basically every song on The Burning World (and its B-sides) on mandolin. At the time, I was playing around mostly with my Gretsch (still my favorite mandolin today) and this old Harmony parlor guitarI bought at a garage sale for $10 that I had strung as an octave mandolin. It was a very fun time, even if I was probably miserable for a lot of it. One of my favorites to play back then was this one, a pretty underrated track from that era of Swans. It's basically all E minor and a worse E minor, pounded into submission (or, as Gira plays it, dissolved into nonexistence)--it's a lot of fun, and you can really wail during it and forget yourself. Anyway, I was messing around today and remembered suddenly that worse Em and, well, anyway, I kinda got sucked into it.
I put the microphone really far away (I even broke out the extension cable) but I still peak it every beat, basically--not that my timing is especially good here. Still, I had a good time playing it, and my hand started bleeding by the end so it felt appropriate to go ahead an post it regardless of its apparent quality.
No, I do not play with a pick.
I don't remember those Burning World songs all that well anymore, but I hope one day that those memories can return to me.
