This month, CHESS hit a major milestone with the delivery and installation of a 20-ton front end vacuum chamber for the High Magnetic Field (HMF) Beamline—the largest vacuum chamber ever deployed at the facility.
Built by AVS, a synchrotron-specialty engineering firm headquartered in Spain, and a local office in Lansing, NY, the massive structure was installed in just 48 hours and aligned within microns— a huge feat and collaboration between international engineers, CHESS scientists, and technical staff.
Featuring interviews with:
-Tim O’Connell, Director of Operations at CHESS
-Eric Van Every, U.S. Division Lead, AVS
What makes this beamline unique?
The HMF Beamline will enable groundbreaking synchrotron x-ray experiments using a 20-tesla magnet—one of the highest magnetic field environments ever paired with synchrotron radiation. It’s never been done before.
