The unsolved mystery of the Lion Mane Nebula

We still don't know why the Lion Mane Nebula is the shape that it is. Here's our best idea though...

Note that the Lion Mane Nebula (NGC 2392) used to be referred to as the "Eskimo nebula", however in 2015 the International Astronomical Union deemed this name inappropriate and offensive, and strongly recommended that the nebula be referred to by it's NGC designation or another nickname.
