Well, I’ll never say we’re anything beyond “mature,” but we’ve seen vast changes over the decades in the auto industry, which now includes a push towards electric vehicles (EVs). Here we are testing two battery-powered crossovers, the subcompact 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric and the somewhat larger Volkswagen ID.4.

A couple of things make this comparison interesting. Both were designed as EVs; neither are evolved or reengineered from existing gas models. The second is that they are on the lower end of the EV scale price-wise, or at least they start off that way. This second-generation Kona starts at $46,399 for the Preferred trim, while we’re in the upper-level Ultimate at $51,199. As for the ID.4, there are six trims offered, starting at $48,495. We have the top-trim Pro S AWD, with an MSRP of $60,495 and then some options including its glass roof, 21-inch wheels, heat pump, and paint scheme that take ours to $64,995. So, for those prices, what’s the difference?
