Learn Finnish: Slowly Spoken Finnish- comprehensible and monitoring hypotheses
The Monitor Hypothesis is one of Stephen Krashen’s five main hypotheses about how people acquire a second language.
According to this idea, we have two ways of developing language: acquisition, which is natural and subconscious, and learning, which is conscious and rule-based.
The “monitor” is the part of our mind that checks what we say or write, using grammar rules we have learned.
However, Krashen argues that too much monitoring can slow down communication — it makes learners hesitate and worry about mistakes instead of speaking freely.
A good language learner, therefore, knows when to use the monitor: mainly when there is enough time, when we focus on correctness, and when we already know the rules.
