Through out my military career, many people have argued over whether service members get paid enough and each side never provides really any evidence to back up their claims. So that is what we will be doing in today's video.
There are 3 things we need before we can start comparing and those are what is the Standard sailor and median Salary earner as these people are going to be the examples of who we compare and last is finding out the criteria to compare them to.
The 6 criteria are going to be their pay after taxes, Rent, Transportation, Groceries, health Insurance premiums, and finally Apparel and services.

Starting with sailor Riley he will have a total of $89,292 at the end of 4 years if he saved up all his money, compared to Alfredo who would have saved roughly $155,695. Both these numbers are net after taxes are taken out.
The second criteria is going to be rent which Alfredo will be baying the US median rent price of $967 per month. Sailor Riley will have to pay absolutely nothing since the military already provides housing for him.
The third is Transportation and the US median average cost of owning a vehicle which includes car ins., gas, repairs, etc. will come out to $779 per month. Riley will be paying the same thing as there is not a huge difference between the 2 in terms of buying a car.
The Fourth criteria is groceries which Alfredo will also be paying the nations monthly median food budget of $639 per month for a single American. Riley will pau $0 since again, the military will provide him with a free source of Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
The 5th criteria is Health premiums which will amount to about $120 per month for single coverage. Riley will have to pay both Health and Life insurance however his monthly cost is only $55 per month including Fica medicare and the SGLI life Insurance.
The last criteria will finally be apparel and services and this one is a bit of a douse as riley will actually be getting PAID $356 per year as a clothing stipend, this is used to repaid uniform items and buy any new uniform items in case the old ones are phased out. However, $356 is quite a bit of money so you could definitely save most of it and put it towards personnel clothing items. Alfredo on the other hand will spend on average $117 per month as the nations median average.
After doing all the math which includes subtracting both of their expenses to their respective 4 year added incomes. Riley would have the potential to save and invest $50,406 vs Alfredo's ability to potentially save and invest $31,648. However we are not done...Riley technically does not need a car and so if we redo his expenses minus his 4 year added income, his new number potential to save and invest will be approximately $87,798!
That is about a $56,150 difference, however before you start making up your mind it is important to go over ALL of things that you will have to ultimately give up in order to have that income. Same for Alfredo. Life is not without its ups and downs but if you ask me for my opinion and If I would have to do it all over again. I do not think I would have joined. And that is because I still believe there is more opportunity to be made outside of the service. However if it wasn't for the military I would not have met some of the amazing people in my life today including my girlfriend, and I would not have found my true passion and calling which was not wanting to work a 9-5 job ever again.
