Marcescence is primarily present on trees in the Beech family (Fagaceae). This includes (obviously) the American Beech, which is infamous for holding its leaves longer than most trees, and Oaks. Some trees in the Birch family show leaf marscence, including the Hop Hornbeam. There is no consensus as to why leaf marcescence even exists, only hypotheses.
