Backpacker disappears without a trace | The case of Oliver Heise

Oliver Heise, a 23-year-old backpacker from North Rhine-Westphalia, disappeared without a trace in the Canary Islands in August 2022. He wanted to travel around Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and La Gomera and spend the night in caves, checking in with his family every day as usual—until, after taking a selfie in Tenerife, all signs of life suddenly ceased. Strange cell phone signals that jumped back and forth between the islands could never be clearly explained. Despite an intensive search, broadcasts on Aktenzeichen XY ungelöst (Unsolved Files) and numerous tips, there is still no trace of him today. For his family, the possibilities remain between voluntary disappearance, an accident or a violent crime – and above all, the desire for certainty.
