ATTRACTING WILDLIFE TO YOUR GARDEN

Today I am hanging another nesting box and a bee hotel to continue to attract wildlife to my garden. The important thing with wildlife is to be consistent. If you put out a feeding station this must be attended to on a very regular schedule. The number of broods a nesting bird produced is based on the availability of food so they are depending on you during the nesting season to keep up that regular supply of food and fresh water. Flocks of sparrows eat at my feeding station daily. In Spain they are an endangered species. When I arrived here to this garden 4 years ago there were only a few, now I have so many I can't even count them anymore. They nest in the nesting boxes I supply and also in the 3 Italian Cypress trees. Sparrows do not mind nesting in colonies. I also have nesting Blackbirds and Turtle doves. This year for the first time I have spotted a pair of Blue Tits in the garden. Fingers crossed they decide to take up residence also. For this reason this nesting box is on its own on a separate tree because Blue Tits are very territorial and don't take kindly to neighbours. The other item I purchased was a Bee Hotel. It took me a while to find what I was looking for because many almost seem ornamental. I wanted a bee hotel not a multi-purpose building! I also wanted the hollow tubes to be the correct depth (6" as opposed to the 4" design which many have). I am very pleased with the one I got which is very sturdy and made of untreated wood.
