While the Pavilion Cottages are (by far) the most ambitious project we've taken on, they're not the first one. Years before we dreamed of buying an abandoned resort in Sharon Springs, we bought our home, a run down c.1915 foursquare in neighboring Ames (the smallest incorporated village in NYS!). It has a pretty incredible history. It came with an outlandish urban legend that turned out to be mostly, sort of... TRUE. We call it the Bootlegger Bungalow.
While the historic features and history were amazing, the kitchen was...NOT. The back part of the house had been cut up in a weird way in the mid 20th century, and the kitchen was hopelessly cramped and dysfunctional. I design kitchens all the time, and this was tough, partially because it was so personal. I am my own worst client, not gonna lie.
Much of what you see was collected over a lifetime, and almost all of it is vintage. I tend to get a little obsessive about the details...it was very important to me that we were able to create a layered but cohesive space with all these disparate salvaged bits and pieces of vintage stuff. At the end of the day I don't think this kitchen is for everyone, but for a passionate collector of vintage kitsch, I'm thrilled with the result.
I'm excited to see what y'all think! Here's a peak inside our private little home world :)
