Historical footage of Jim Davenport Sensei demonstrating Chito-ryu Seisan kata (front and side views) in 2002.
A highly skilled karate-ka and widely respected instructor, Jim Davenport Sensei began his study of Chitō-ryū Karate in 1970 under George Van Horne Sensei. In 1984, he assumed teaching responsibilities at the Frankfort Dojo. The following year, he joined the U.S. Army and served as a Counterintelligence Agent with the 11th Special Forces Group.
Over the years, Davenport Sensei trained with numerous senior martial artists across a wide range of styles and taught Defensive Tactics to police officers and military personnel. In 2004, he and several senior Chitō-ryū instructors founded the Kōshin-ha Chitō-ryū Karate-dō Association, where he served on both the Shihan-kai and Shibu-kai Executive Committees until his passing.
On September 23, 2006—one day prior to his teacher’s death—Davenport Sensei was awarded the rank of Hachidan (8th Degree Black Belt) by his teacher. He received the title of Hanshi in 2007, and in 2009 was promoted to Kudan (9th Degree Black Belt) by the All-Japan Seibukan Martial Arts Association.
Jim Davenport passed away on October 11, 2013.
