Jürgen Nikolaus is a 76-year-old lifelong martial artist, Judo legend, and recently promoted Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. Born in Germany in 1949, Jürgen’s grappling journey began with wrestling at age five before discovering Judo in a French occupation gym in 1955.

His dedication led him to Tokyo in 1968, where he spent six years training at the prestigious Kodokan and Waseda University under Judo icons like Isao Okano and Osawa. During his time in Japan, he overcame significant adversity—including being robbed of all his possessions—and was supported by the local community to continue his training.

Upon returning to Europe, Jürgen became a successful gym owner, running a massive 3,000-member dojo in Strasbourg. In a fascinating career pivot, he later became a professional falconer in Marbella, Spain, performing eagle and raptor demonstrations for over 12 years.

Now living in Spain, Jürgen defies age and medical history. Despite undergoing four heart operations, he continues to train daily, recently earning his BJJ black belt after nearly a decade of dedicated practice. He is a living testament to the "martial artist for life" philosophy, emphasising discipline, respect, and the importance of listening to one's body.
