In this 6th episode of my "Unique Connection Series", I take a truly unique connection, located in Hawai'i on the island of Moloka'i, in the EAS community of Kalaupapa. A former leprosy colony that still doesn't allow outside visitors unless they are a guest of one of the locals, obtain a special permit from the Hawaiian government or work for the National Park Service in Kalaupapa.

I fly on Mokulele Airlines (Operated by Southern Airways Express) on an 8-seat Cessna 208B Grand Caravan. This connection is the only way outsiders will be able to see the community in person without a special permit or prior permission from the government, so soak in the views while you are there. This was the 37th EAS Airport I have visited :) .
While taking a Unique Connection definitely isn't the fastest way of getting where you need to go, it may certainly be the most fun way to fly. In this case, the connection only adds 10-15min over the nonstop option, plus it's the only way most of us will be able to see the Kalaupapa in person. Next time you fly connect somewhere new, you may just like where you end up.
