Cycling along the Elbe: Torgau – Riesa – Meißen – Dresden – Pirna
There are cycling routes that are simply pleasant, and there are those that etch themselves into memory — not just because of the scenery, but because of the history and the rhythm of the journey. The Elberadweg is one of those routes. Although it stretches over 1200 kilometers, the section I chose — from Torgau to Pirna — was a concentrated dose of everything I love about cycling: a river that guides you, towns that tell stories, and the feeling of freedom when the horizon is always right in front of your wheels.
The Elberadweg follows the course of the Elbe River from the Krkonoše Mountains in the Czech Republic to the North Sea, passing through both the Czech Republic and Germany. It is often ranked among the most beautiful and popular cycling routes in Europe. Its advantages include an almost entirely flat terrain, excellent infrastructure, and the possibility of cycling straight into the heart of historic towns.
Torgau – A Renaissance gem on the Elbe
Torgau is a small but historically significant town, known for the Renaissance Hartenfels Castle and as the meeting point of American and Soviet troops in 1945. Its streets are peaceful, with pastel-colored facades, and a walk through the center reveals cafés where time seems to slow down.
This is where my ride began — in the early morning air, with the quiet river beside me, and the feeling that several days of pure cycling joy lay ahead.
Riesa – An industrial town with a soul
Riesa may have the image of an industrial hub, but along the Elbe’s banks it hides a cyclist’s paradise: wide, flat paths and green shores inviting you to take a break. The town is also famous for its large pasta factory — if you’re a spaghetti lover, this is the perfect place for a stop.
Meißen – The cradle of porcelain
Arriving in Meißen feels like stepping into a living postcard. The historic center, cathedral, and Albrechtsburg Castle sit above the river, and the whole town radiates tradition. This is the birthplace of the world-famous Meissen porcelain. The cycling route runs right along the river, but it’s worth leaving the bike behind to wander through the old streets.
Dresden – A baroque jewel on the Elbe
Dresden, the capital of Saxony, is a true masterpiece of architecture and art. The Frauenkirche, Semperoper, and Zwinger Palace all bear witness to its glorious past. The city was almost completely rebuilt after its destruction in World War II, and cycling along the Elbe offers an unforgettable view of the old town’s skyline.
Pirna – The gateway to Saxon Switzerland
Pirna is a charming town marking the entrance to the Saxon Switzerland region, famous for its dramatic sandstone cliffs and hiking trails. Its old town is filled with Renaissance and Baroque houses, and the atmosphere is warm and peaceful. For me, Pirna was the natural conclusion of the route — from here the mountains begin, and behind me lay a chain of towns along which the Elbe flows like a quiet companion.
