In the 29th century, Earth is a wasteland due to ecocide caused by rampant consumerism, corporate greed, and environmental negligence. Humanity was evacuated into space by the megacorporation Buy n Large in gigantic spaceships 700 years prior, leaving behind the trash-compacting robots "WALL-E" to clean up the planet. All but one robot have ceased functioning; the last remaining active WALL-E has developed a personality. WALL-E keeps himself active by collecting parts from inactive robots, his only companion being his pet cockroach, Hal.
One day, WALL-E's routine of compacting trash and collecting interesting objects is interrupted by the arrival of a robot named EVE, who scans the planet for sustainable life. WALL-E is charmed by the elegant and futuristic robot, and the two begin to connect, until EVE enters standby mode when WALL-E shows her his latest discovery: a living sapling. EVE is rescued by a large unmanned rocket; With WALL-E clinging to him, he returns to his mothership, the starship Axiom.
In the centuries that have passed since the Axiom left Earth, its passengers have degenerated into morbid obesity due to microgravity and laziness, with robots catering to their every whim. Captain B. McCrea relaxes while his robotic autopilot, nicknamed AUTO, pilots the ship. McCrea is unprepared for the probe's positive response, but discovers that placing the plant in the ship's Holo-Detector will trigger a hyperspace jump back to Earth so humanity can begin recolonization. When McCrea inspects EVE's storage compartment, the plant is gone, and EVE blames WALL-E for its disappearance.
EVE is deemed defective and taken for diagnosis. WALL-E intervenes and inadvertently frees the other defective robots, causing him and EVE to be designated rogue robots. EVE attempts to send WALL-E home in an escape pod, but the two witness McCrea's first robot, GO-4, securing the plant in a self-destruct-programmed pod. WALL-E enters the pod to retrieve the plant just as it's launched, and he and the plant survive the pod's destruction. EVE catches up with him, and they reconcile, celebrating with a dance in space around the Axiom.
EVE takes the plant to McCrea, who watches the recordings of Earth she made and concludes they need to save it. AUTO reveals its secret no-return directive, A113, which forbids them from returning to Earth due to toxicity levels that make it uninhabitable. When McCrea tries to ignore the directive, AUTO electrocutes WALL-E, throws him and EVE into a garbage chute, and confines McCrea to his quarters. EVE and WALL-E are nearly ejected into space with the Axiom's debris, but a cleaning robot named MO accidentally jams the hatch and rescues them.
While humans and robots help protect the power plant, McCrea and AUTO fight for control of the Axiom. AUTO crushes WALL-E using the Holo-Detector, but McCrea overpowers and disables it. EVE inserts the power plant into the Holo-Detector, initiating the hyperjump back to Earth. Upon arriving on Earth, EVE repairs WALL-E, but his memory and personality have been erased. Devastated, EVE "kisses" WALL-E, which releases a shock of static electricity, restoring him. WALL-E and EVE are reunited as the inhabitants of the Axiom take their first steps on Earth.
During the end credits, humans and robots work to restore the devastated planet, and the plant grows and transforms into a tree, under which WALL-E and EVE rest.
