There is something beautifully unsettling about Richard Dawson’s music and lyrics, as he, with his falsetto voice and rattling guitar, creates music that is built upon remnants of folk music yet never really fits entirely in that box. Dawson’s songs have a spiritual edge to them as if they’re part of the hymn book of an ancient, forgotten religion from Newcastle in England where he’s spent most of his life - and it makes sense why Dawson calls it “ritual community music”.
We met Dawson at the hotel he was staying at in Copenhagen and recorded this session in his room. He performs “We Picked Apple In A Graveyard Freshly Mowed” from his 2011 album “The Magic Bridge”.
