STORYLINE:
According to official figures, some 15,000 protesters gathered in Barcelona on Thursday to protest against the Israeli forces which had earlier intercepted an international flotilla carrying activists seeking to break the blockade of the Palestinian territory of Gaza.
While the event was largely peaceful, riot police did clash with protesters.
Thousands of people supporting the flotilla took to the streets in several major cities after news of the interception broke — including in London, Madrid; Istanbul; Athens, Greece; and Buenos Aires, Argentina — to decry the Israeli operation and the ongoing offensive in the Gaza Strip. Italy’s largest union called for a one-day general strike on Friday.
