Elkerton was years ahead of everyone surfing Sunset Beach at this moment in time, and this contest was the first of back to back victories at Sunset during the 1987 season. This victory over Tony Moniz, Mike Parsons, and Simon Law, and the win in the Billabong Pro at Sunset's next contest, not only won him the Triple Crown but ultimately propelled him to within one heat of the world title.
