Flower Constellation, installed at McKee Botanical Garden in Vero Beach, Florida, invites viewers to consider the delicate, cosmic interconnectedness of life on Earth. Positioned at the midpoint of the Jungle Garden trail, this installation is framed by artistic columns symbolizing qualities of love, joy, reverence, strength, and resilience—qualities that underscore the journey along this path, encouraging visitors to pause, reflect, and connect.
Each ceramic flower in this constellation was originally crafted for Florida’s quincentennial in 2013, a tribute to the native wildflowers that shape Florida’s unique biodiversity. These blooms, randomly arranged on structures designed by landscape architect David Sacks, are not merely decorative but symbolic markers of the natural cycles that sustain life. Just as constellations in the night sky tell stories of deities, warriors, and animals, these wildflowers inspire connections, inviting us to find meaning in their patterns and cycles.
In every delicate form, a flower represents the source of life on our planet—a symbol of beauty and purpose within the ecosystem. Pollinated by indispensable co-evolved partners, these flowers sustain the food web for all creatures, including humanity. As we gaze upon these ceramic blooms and the living plants around them, we are reminded of our place within these cycles, of the magic and science woven into the simple acts of blooming, pollinating, and fruiting.
Through Flower Constellation, I invite viewers to find patterns in these flowers, much like our ancestors traced the stars to form constellations. As wildflowers are increasingly displaced by human development, this installation offers a vision of what we risk losing—a world of natural engineering that regenerates, heals, and sustains. With each glance, I hope viewers feel a sense of awe for these “floral constellations,” evoking a mindfulness to protect the beauty and complexity of our planet’s ecosystems.
Nestled in the Jungle Garden, where swamp ferns, native flora, and towering red maples surround this oasis, Flower Constellation serves as both a visual anchor and a call to preserve the intricate connections that wildflowers foster. Here, amidst vibrant blooms, we are invited to pause, to consider our place within this ecological design, and to find ourselves in patterns that sustain life—just as our stars and our flowers have always done.
