A projector clicks on in a humid Mississippi barracks. The screen flickers white. Lieutenant General Friedrich Werner Schmidt sits rigid in a metal folding chair. His hands grip his knees.

This is the story of a decorated Nazi bomber commander who discovered the truth in captivity and spent the rest of his life trying to atone.

May eighth, nineteen forty-five. Friedrich Werner Schmidt stood in the smoking ruins of a Bavarian airfield and watched American tanks roll toward him through the morning fog. He was forty-one years old. His uniform was pressed despite the chaos. The Knight's Cross hung at his throat, earned for operational efficiency on the Eastern Front. Around him, younger officers were burning documents, smashing radios, preparing for whatever came next. Schmidt did none of these things. He simply waited.

The tank commander who accepted his surrender was a captain from Ohio. The man was polite. Professional. He collected Schmidt's sidearm, a Walther P38 that had never been fired in anger, and placed it carefully in a wooden crate with dozens of others. Schmidt watched his pistol disappear among the others and felt nothing. He had flown three hundred and seventeen bomber missions over Russia. He had commanded two hundred and thirty men. He had followed every order without question. Now the war was over, and he was still alive.

The Americans transported him west in a truck convoy. Schmidt sat with eleven other Luftwaffe officers, men he knew by reputation if not personally. Nobody spoke. They passed through villages where white sheets hung from windows. German civilians stood in doorways and watched them pass with empty faces. Some of the prisoners looked away. Schmidt kept watching. He wanted to see what defeat looked like.
