In a world filled with complexities and constant movement, Sir Anthony Hopkins's motto resonates with a lot of people: "Keep calm and never hurry. Don't make God laugh at your plans, and don't get worked up about imposing your truth onto others. Remember, your happiness and death will come to you at the right time. There's no way you can influence that."
Semion Vinokur asked Kabbalist Dr. Michael Laitman to break down this motto from his perspective, so here it goes.
Keep Calm and Never Hurry
In a world that seems to accelerate with each passing day, I endorse the idea of staying calm and avoiding unnecessary haste. Time is an immutable force. Regardless of how frantically we move, the hands of the clock remain resolute. So why rush to accomplish tasks or accumulate wealth when the tempo of life is beyond our control?
Don't Make God Laugh at Your Plans
Our aspirations often drive us to formulate intricate plans, but what if these plans are not ours to orchestrate? We should rather synchronize our actions with the plan of creation and let life unfold naturally. Our grand designs may not align with the greater plan of the universe, and it thus throws into question whether our ceaseless striving and activity actually serve to benefit us, or perhaps worsen our lives?
Don't Get Worked Up About Imposing Your Truth on Others
It is intrinsic to human nature that we wish to prove ourselves right and impose our version of truth upon others. However, I advise against engaging in futile battles of righteousness. Each person perceives life through their unique lens, tinted by their individual ego.
Remember, Your Happiness and Death Will Come at the Right Time
In an era when we invest substantial effort in extending our lifespans, accepting that our destinies are predetermined is a sobering idea. Even if we did not advance medicine and science, the duration of our lives would remain unaltered. This concept can be challenging to grasp in a world where longevity is highly esteemed.
So, what is the golden rule to live by? The answer is surprisingly straightforward: don't fret. The ceaseless pursuit of career accomplishments and achievements often crumbles before our eyes. In the quest for meaning, I propose that life's purpose lies in finding equilibrium with the plan set in the laws of nature and flowing harmoniously by equalizing with these laws. Achieving this balance results in reaching the feeling of a harmonious and peaceful world.
When does this serenity arrive? It may take years of dedicated learning, possibly even two decades or less if one finds themselves in the right company. The principles become tangible when we cease to obstruct the flow of life with our plans and actions. Instead, we discern the current, letting it transport us.
Ultimately, it all comes down to time. Not the ticking of a clock or the inexorable march of years, but the flow of existence. Time, as I perceive it, is the river of life, and wisdom lies in embracing it, surrendering to its current.
