Welcome to the city of Durbuy.
Located in the southern half of Belgium, Wallonia, in the province of Luxembourg, on the edge of the Ardennes Forest.
The river Ourthe, which is 165 kilometers long, flows next to the city center.
Durbuy likes to promote itself as the world's smallest city, although primarily for commercial reasons.
About 400 inhabitants live in the city center with its still medieval cobbled streets.
Durbuy has human habitation going back to Gallo-Roman times.
In the Middle Ages, Durbuy was an important trade and industry center.
To find out more about Durbuy, we have to travel to the year 1331.
The year in which King John of Bohemia and Count of Luxembourg granted Durbuy city rights.
It has retained the best bits of its past, such as the cobbled streets, the castle, houses from the 17th century, the corn market and the church of St Nicholas (Est.1630).
The current castle of Durbuy or Château de Durbuy was built in 1882, but according to archives, a castle was destroyed on this site as early as the year 900.
The current castle is still privately owned and therefore cannot be visited.
Nowadays Durbuy is primarily a hotspot for tourism and recreation.
In the enchanting city center you will find various authentic restaurants, souvenir shops and accommodation options.
Durbuy also has a beautiful Topiary Park, only against payment.
Within it is a botanical garden, guided tours of the pruned plants in different shapes and a souvenir shop with a bar.
