We all watched Lex destroy any glimmer of hope that Lana and Clark had of being together, what we didnt see was what happened after...
Lana is completely defeated after hurting Clark like she had too. Too painful for Lana to move on, she chooses to instead watch him from a distance. As she watches him she is also forced to watch him fall in love with Lois. And although it kills her to see him with someone else she is still able to appreciate the love that Lois has for Clark. It pains her to think that could have been hers if not for Lex. But it is bittersweet because she is happy to see someone love Clark like she cant.
