Established in the year of 1979 by the Indian railways, Mysore Rail Museum is the second museum of its kind, after the National Railway Museum, which is located in Delhi. This museum boasts of a rich collection of photographs and various items depicting various stages in the development of Indian railways along with a captivating exhibit of locomotives. Previously most of the exhibits of the museums were kept at the Mysore Palace and later were shifted to their present place.One of the major attractions of the museum is the Chamundi Gallery, which has an extensive range of pictures and paintings on the railways and its growth on display. Sri Ranga Pavilion is another prominent part of this museum. It has two royal coaches on display. These grand coaches that belonged to the Maharaja of Mysore present a real picture of the luxury and grandeur with which the royals used to travel. Maharani's saloon carriage is also quite interesting to explore. This coach that dates back to 1899 is equipped with kitchen, dining car unit and royal toilet as well. Another attractive feature of the palace is Austin Railway Car. It is 1925 Austin model, which was initially built for the roads, was converted into a railcar. It is said that this model was repossessed by a railway employee from scrap dealer. The employee restored the vehicle by making a few changes to the old model; he removed the steering wheel, and fixed the rail wheel on it.
The very first steam engine to be built in India and signals are also displayed here at the museum. There are many rare exhibits at the museum, taking you to the eras gone by. A wooden pillar and doors, belonging to the Old Srirangapatna railway station and a wired fence that used to an important part, are also exhibited here.
A hand operated steam water pump, dating back to 1934; 1885 hand operate crane are also displayed here. Along with all this, visitors can also look at a wide range of lights, tickets, ticketing machines, signal signs, clocks, black and white photographs and paintings; each of the items represents various development phases of the Indian railways.
There is a mini toy- train, operating on battery that takes visitors for a ride around the grounds of museum. This train is especially popular among children.
Mysore Railway museum timings are 10.00 AM to 5.30 PM. Visitors can visit this museum on all days of the week except on Tuesdays.
Visitors are charged a minimal entry fee for exploring the marvellous collection at this railway museum. Entry fee for adults is said to be Rs.50 per person while for child it is Rs.20 only.
Reaching Railway Museum Mysore
Mysore Railway Museum is easily accessible as it is located quite near to the railway station of Mysore. From the city centre it is about 3 km away. It is located on the Krishnaraja Sagar Road (KRS Road), standing opposite to the CFT Research Institute. Tourists can take a hired taxi or auto rickshaw to the museum. If commuting by bus then also there won’t be any hassle, as many Mysore city buses run via railway museum.
