Honeybee Mite Treatment using Car Battery and Oxalic Acid - The Bee Store

Hey, this is John from The Bee Store and we're mixing car batteries and bees!

When it comes to beekeeping, bee health is very important, and while we're reaching the end of the "flow," our bee populations tend to slow while our mite populations are just getting started wreaking havoc on our hives.

In the past, we've shown you how to test for mites using mite strips and the powdered sugar method - these are still the most accurate ways to test for mites, but today we wanted to cover mite treatments.

Using a car battery and oxalic acid, we treated our bees for mite infestations. This is a TREATMENT - not a mite count. You count first, then you treat. This treatment method will kill 95 - 99% of mites, so it's very effective. It does not, however, penetrate capped brood. That's a different treatment we'll cover in the future (formic acid treatment).

This means we have to do this treatment once a week for three weeks to make sure we get all the new bee babies.

While this method may have a few upfront costs - the battery, a battery tender, the vaporizer, and the acid, over the course of years, this treatment is really cost effective.
