Liberty Work Building Trust with a Mustang Haltering Sessions

"Tippy" the Mustang came to us with some baggage, obviously some trauma. Gathered from the Twin Peaks HMA in CA, transported to TN, purchased via Sale Authority and brought to Rein Rescue in NC, purchased and sent to us in SC for training and eventually headed to Seabrook Island, he has traveled extensively. Missing much of his left ear and originally arriving at Rein with huge scrapes on his face, there is no way of knowing what he has been through, whether through his herd, people or transport, but the trauma is real.

After spending a couple of weeks just getting used to life here in SC, he was able to stand still on approach and "put up with" people, but real trust wasn't there yet. Then suddenly, he started to withdraw. His energy changed, followed by his behavior. Fearful of an oncoming colic episode because of this behavior and the weather this time of year, we spent several days of watchful care, to finally come away with an ulcer diagnosis. As he worked through his first round of meds, everyone (including Tippy) gave a great sigh of relief. He was obviously feeling better physically.

It was time to strip away everything else and just be. There are no true quick fixes.

Follow his journey as we spend time building trust, fostering connections and helping him to help himself survive in People's World. As Bruce helps Tippy to help himself, Tippy is helping Bruce face the past as well and come through on the other side. The work is long and isn't for the faint of heart, but he is worth it.
