The Line That Shook San Francisco: Exploring the San Andreas Fault | The Rock Record

Today we are testing fate and standing directly on the San Andreas Fault. In this episode, I explore the literal boundary between two of Earth's massive tectonic plates. This geological giant is responsible for San Francisco's devastating 1906 earthquake and continues to shape California's landscape today, moving at 1.5 inches per year!

Join me as I walk along one of the world's most famous fault lines and experience what a major earthquake feels like.

The San Andreas Fault runs 800 miles through California, separating the Pacific Plate from the North American Plate. At Mission San Juan Bautista, you can actually see the surface expression of this fault and stand on different tectonic plates. In San Francisco, visit the California Academy of Sciences' Shake House to experience simulations of the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes.

To see the San Andreas Fault for yourself, visit Mission San Juan Bautista (about 1.5 hours south of San Francisco) or explore the Twin Peaks area for panoramic views of how geology has shaped this iconic city.
