ABDUL AHAD SAAZ

Born on October 16, 1950 in Mumbai, Abdul Ahad Saaz was an esteemed Urdu poet whose verses, celebrated for their quiet depth and lyrical grace, found a place in the Maharashtra State Board syllabus. His notable collections, Khamoshi Bol Uthi Hai (1990) and Sargoshiyan Zamanon Ki (2003), resonate with the same introspective spirit reflected in his life—a shy, devout Muslim who ran a cloth shop yet devoted countless hours to poetry, frequenting Maktaba Jamia’s bookshop and participating in mushairas both in India and abroad. Honoured with the Maharashtra State Urdu Academy and West Bengal Urdu Academy awards for his literary contributions, Saaz was known among peers for his gentle wisdom and unwavering passion for preserving Urdu’s rich heritage. In March 2020, during India’s “junta curfew” amidst the pandemic, he quietly passed away after a long battle with diabetes, a departure fitting of the poignant silence he so often evoked in his work. Saaz’s life and poetry remain testaments to the delicate balance between everyday toil and transcendent art, echoing through verses that speak long after their author’s final breath.

eid us pari-wash ki
ABDUL AHAD SAAZ

phūTī lab-e-nāzuk se vo ik shoḳh sī laalī
thoḌī sī shafaq āriz-e-tābāñ ne churā lī
phir baam kī jānib uThe abrū-e-hilālī

aur chāñd ne sharmā ke kahā eid-mubārak

chheḌā vo hasīñ shab ne tamannāoñ kā jaadū
lahrā ga.ī ḳhalvat-kada-e-nāz meñ ḳhushbū
haule se sañvarne lage ehsās ke gesū

dī kis ne dar-e-dil pe sadā eid-mubārak

jhalkā ruḳh-e-raushan pe hasīñ sub.h kā partav
gulnār hathelī pe hinā dene lagī lau
zulfoñ se chalī nik.hat-e-vārafta kī ik rau

paiġhām liye aa.ī sabā eid-mubārak

sakhiyoñ ne ḳhayāloñ ke hasīñ rañg ubhāre
jaage ka.ī ḳhvābīda se jazbāt ke dhāre
phūTe vo nigāhoñ se tabassum ke phuvāre

māhaul huā naġhma-navā eid-mubārak

sadqe tire ai rūh-e-adā paik-e-latāfat
ḳhush aa.e tire husn ko ye kaif kī saa.at
ye tohfa-e-ash.ār hai nazrān-e-ulfat
