(15 Mar 2019) In Chicago, hundreds of Muslims packed the prayer hall in one the city's oldest mosques, the Muslim Community Center, for Friday prayers.
As the call to prayer echoed through the building, men and women - many of them immigrants - shuffled through the lobby, piling their shoes in the hallway and taking their seats on red oriental prayer rugs as the imam began his sermon.
"We may be scared," the imam said passionately to the congregants, "but we cannot be afraid to come to the mosque."
Yusuf Umar, the manager of MCC, said the grief didn't hit him until he arrived to the mosque for dawn prayers, saw media crews outside and began talking to fellow early-morning worshippers.
"It's become very normal lately - Islamophobia everywhere in the United States, as well as other countries," he said. "It's our duty to make people aware that we are peace-loving people."
