Directed by Taika Waititi, adapted from Christine Leunens's 2008 book Caging Skies, this film stars Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo, Scarlett Johansson as Rosie, and Taika Waititi as the imaginary Hitler. It tells the story of a young boy in Nazi Germany whose worldview is challenged when he discovers his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.
I was completely blown away by how funny and emotional this movie is. The humor is absurd but sharp, the performances are outstanding, and the story is surprisingly heartfelt. Jojo’s growth, Rosie’s courage, and the way the film balances comedy with tragedy made me laugh and cry. The cinematography, script, and acting all work together perfectly to deliver a movie experience unlike anything I’ve seen before.
