The historical city of Mysore,much older than Bengalooru,brings nostalgic memories to one's mind,when the very mention of it's name is made.

A Mysorean is thus a proud Mysorean today, for,he lives peacefully in a city of Palaces, Places of Worship,a Dam of world repute,a Sanctuary of Birds,a Zoological Garden-the list is endless.

Come to September-October, Mysore springs to life with almost every Mysorean engaged in making the Dasara Festival, a grand success, when thousands of Tourists from within the country and abroad visit Mysore.The local administration as well as the people of Mysore take pains to ensure that every Visitor has a comfortable and memorable stay.

A legend relating to Mysore goes like this. Mahishasura, the demon was born through a union between Rambha, an Asura king, and Mahishi(she buffalo). Mahishasura became very powerful after gaining a boon from God Agni and was creating havoc in heaven by chasing and conquering all the Gods.

Bewildered,the Gods approached Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu for help.Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu knew that only a woman could annihilate Mahishasura.Accordingly,they created a Goddess with the combined powers of all the Gods and thus was created the all powerful Goddess Chamundeshwari.

Goddess Chamundeshwari,whose main task was to destroy Mahishasura,engaged him in a fierce battle.The battle lasted for over 10000 years during which Mahishasura assumed various forms.At the end Goddess Chamundeswari observed that from every drop of blood that spilled out of Mahishasura another demon was born.To put an end to this she created Goddess Tripurasundari,to ensure that no blood dripped from Mahishasura.Demon Mahishasura was finally annihilated, by his head being severed by Goddess Chamundeshwari.

To honour her victory over the evil Mahishasura,a beautiful temple has been built for Goddess Chamundeswari atop a hill on the outskirts of Mysore,named Chamundi Hill.

Goddess Tripurasundari who is now regarded as the sister of Goddess Chamundeswari resides in a temple built for her at Uthanahalli about three kilometres from Chamundi hill.

The Temple,built at a slightly elevated place has a compound wall around it.It is reported to be very ancient.

After entering the temple gates, we are welcomed by Lord Ganesha.After paying obeisance to him we move in a queue to stand before Goddess Tripurasundari.The main idol of Goddess Tripurasundari has an elongated protruding tongue with which she would swallow all the evils troubling her ardent devotees.A great similarity can be seen here as she appears like Goddess Kali of Kolkata.After offering prayers to her we move on to the point where her foot prints exist.

After this we move to the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Shiva whose face we see covered in a silver mask, unlike in Chola Temples where the Lingam is draped only in a Dhoti and Angavastram.He looks serene and benevolent.

The Utsava idol of Goddess Tripurasundari is in a separate enclosure.

Inside the Temple quadrangle there is a small Meditation cum Homam Hall where Homas are performed and Devotees can meditate peacefully.
The Temple is maintained very beautifully.

How to reach Uthanahalli
Utanahalli can be reached by road from Mysore being seven kilometres away.Regular buses ply.
From Chamundi hill top one can reach Uthanahalli about three kilometres away through the road touching the monolith Nandi.Its better to seek directions here as there are no sign boards.The road is narrow though. Night travel could be avoided.

07-30 to 14-00
15.30 to 20.30

Many perhaps may not know about this Temple as they may be confining their visits only to Goddess Chamundeshwari's Temple.But one visit would make the Devotees go again and again to Goddess Tripurasundari's Temple to seek succour to their problems.
