Arapaima (Arapaima gigas) – The Giant Freshwater Fish
The Arapaima is one of the largest freshwater fish, native to the Amazon River. It can grow up to 10 feet (3 meters) and weigh 440 pounds (200 kg). Its large, tough scales and ability to breathe air allow it to survive in low-oxygen waters.
Arapaima lives in slow-moving waters and is a carnivorous predator, feeding on fish, crustaceans, and small animals. It reproduces by laying eggs in shallow waters, and males protect their young.
Due to overfishing and habitat destruction, arapaima is classified as Near Threatened. It has also been introduced to various countries for aquaculture and the aquarium trade, sometimes raising concerns about its impact on local ecosystems. 🌍🐟
