The Surrender at Appomattox | Appomattox 160

Surrounded on all sides, Robert E. Lee agrees to surrender the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, at the McLean House in Appomattox Court House. This event is considered the most significant surrender of the Civil War, precipitating the capitulation of remaining Confederate forces throughout the South, leading to the end of the bloodiest conflict in American history.
