The Supreme Court of India has issued an interim order halting the Election Commission's move to delete over 65 lakh names from the Bihar voter list. The Court directed that the list of removed voters must be published on the official website by August 19, along with clear reasons for each deletion.
Printed copies of the removed voter names must also be displayed at local panchayat and taluk-level election offices. Affected individuals can reapply to have their names reinstated by presenting their Aadhaar card. The Supreme Court bench, headed by Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Surya Kant, emphasized the need for transparency and accountability.
This order comes after massive protests in Patna, led by RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging large-scale voter suppression. Rahul Gandhi also revealed documents claiming over 1 lakh fake voter names in Bangalore Central constituency.
The BJP and JD(U) had defended the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision process, but the Supreme Court’s intervention has now raised questions over its legitimacy. The Court is expected to closely monitor the review process going forward.
This marks a significant moment in the opposition-led INDIA alliance’s ongoing campaign against alleged voter list manipulation across several states. The controversy has also intensified political pressure on the Modi government, with allegations that the Election Commission is acting as a puppet of the central government gaining traction.
