Rescue from Mississippi River Mud - 7 Kids + Mom Adventure - Day 45

Mississippi River camping turned into a mud rescue as our family adventure with 7 kids pushed miles in brutal heat toward Dubuque, Iowa.

Day 45 tested us with exhaustion, sun sickness, and a rescue in the river mud. We started near Guttenberg, Iowa, paddling under full sun with no clouds for cover. Phones overheated, the kids begged to swim, and we stopped often just to cool off.

Our plan was to stop at Finley’s Landing, but the kids pushed us further. By evening, we were hauling canoes into Mud Lake Campground; sunburned, sore, and completely spent.

Then came kindness: the Dockside Marina Restaurant had closed, but the owners reopened just for us, cooking a meal while the kids fished and laughed nearby. After a brutal day on the Mississippi, it was exactly what we needed.
