Rangelands in Bhutan are critical part of protected areas, biological corridors, and community forests. However, climate change and environmental degradation threaten these vital ecosystems.
To address this, Bhutan’s revised Forest and Nature Conservation Act (2023) promotes Nature based Solutions (NbS) for rangeland restoration. The recent leasehold-based redistribution of pastures (tsa-drog) has strengthened user rights and mandated management plans – key steps for sustainable resource governance.
Under ICIMOD’s Himalayan Resilience Enabling Action Programme (HI-REAP), restoration efforts are underway in Tsheko, a winter grazing area, led by ICIMOD and Bhutan’s Department of Forests and Park Services. This video highlights their work to revive these degraded landscapes.
