Yingge dance is a traditional folk dance originating from the Chaoshan region in southern China, encompassing areas such as Shantou, Chaozhou, Jieyang, and Zhangzhou. This large-scale group dance integrates elements of southern martial arts, local opera, and other regional performing arts. Characterized by vigorous movements, rhythmic precision, and dramatic formations, Yingge dance is performed with wooden mallets and often accompanied by large gongs, creating an intense and energetic atmosphere. The dance's distinctive costumes and face paintings represent various cultural symbols, with colors and designs reflecting different character traits and roles. The performances, based on classical Chinese stories like Water Margin and the legends of Mu Guiying and Hua Mulan, showcase themes of heroism and cultural pride. Recognized as an intangible cultural heritage in 2006, Yingge dance faces challenges in preserving its traditions, particularly due to the aging of practitioners and rural economic imbalances.
