Black Iron Fuel Tank Repair on a 1969Trawler

Trawler yachts built in the 1960s and 70s mostly have black iron, or plain steel (non-galvanized) fuel tanks. Steel fuel tanks tend to rust, either from the inside from water sitting in the bottom of the tank or from the outside, from water trapped in the wood on which many tanks are mounted. The top of these tanks also rust, often from leaks around the fill pipe that go unnoticed. This video shows how I repaired the bottom of a plain steel fuel tank in my 1969 trawler that I suspected of leaking, although it probably wasn't. The tank is made of 3/16" steel and is basically in good condition, although the outside bottom of the tank is rusted and pitted from sitting on a wooden platform that was saturated with water from a leaking water tank, since replaced. This is a work in progress, because one of the access plates that I installed in the tank was weeping after I filled the tank with fuel, so I drained the tank again and re-sealed that access plate. I won't know until fall 2020 whether re-sealing the access plate worked, but I am confident that it will. Stay tuned in the fall of 2020 for the final verdict.
