Yuyuan Garden (豫园), also known simply as Yu Garden or the Garden of Happiness/Peace, is a classical Ming‑dynasty private garden located in Shanghai’s Huangpu District, adjacent to the City God Temple and Yuyuan Bazaar.
Created between 1559 and 1577 by official Pan Yunduan to provide his parents with a tranquil retreat, it spans roughly 2 hectares (5 acres) and remains one of Shanghai’s most cherished heritage sites.
The garden is arranged in six exquisitely designed sections—Sansui Hall, Wanhua Chamber, Dianchun Hall, Huijing Hall, Yuhua Hall, and the Inner Garden—each separated by the distinctive “dragon walls” with grey tiled ridges ending in dragon heads.
Today, Yuyuan Garden is a state‑protected scenic spot with over 40 individual vistas, rich in both natural beauty and cultural symbolism.
