You will probably have a complication.
Yep. I said it, and I’ll say it again.
You will, more likely than not, have at least a minor complication during your facelift recovery.
Strictly speaking, a complication is any setback during or after your surgery.
The most common complications - lingering bruises, focal islands of swelling, temporary changes of motion or sensation - are all self limited, and resolve with tincture of time alone.
Practically every facelift patient will experience one or more of these. They are so common, they are more “normal parts of recovery” than “complications.”
Intermediate level complications, such as mild infections or incision line problems, require readily-available treatments like oral antibiotics and care by your doctor every few days.
Rarely, however, even the best of the best surgeons encounter more meaningful complications.
These complications might require once or twice or even 3x per day in-person care or intravenous antibiotics, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or even emergency surgery in the middle of the night.
A true facelift expert has seen and overcome all of the above types of issues in his own patients, and can identify and treat them early.
They remain available to you 24/7. They are ready, at all times, with nursing support, medications, and operating room availability to take care of any foreseeable issue right in their own office.
They also have true hospital privileges (God forbid you need to be admitted) and established relationships with trusted specialists such as infectious disease experts or ophthalmologists to call on for their personal areas of expertise.
When you are choosing a surgeon, it’s not only about pretty before and after pictures. You are choosing the person and team who will be there for you when you need them.
