In the 1990s, plans began to reintroduce the tram in Clermont-Ferrand. After massive protests from the local industry, particularly the tire manufacturer Michelin, the city became the first in the world to opt for the "Translohr." This tram system uses rubber tires and is held in place by a central rail. However, hopes of significantly reduced construction and maintenance costs compared to traditional trams remained largely unfulfilled.
Line A opened between 2006 and 2007 and was extended by three more stops in 2013. Planning for a second line was halted by the discontinuation of production of the Translohr system in 2018. Since the vehicles and infrastructure of Line A will reach the end of their service life in the 2030s, discussions are already underway about the future of this line. The conversion to a traditional tram line is one of the options.
The line is operated by 30 STE4 trains, which were purchased in three series. The ride is quite unpleasant thanks to the deafeningly loud engines, poor suspension, and cramped passenger compartment.
