Seal Rescue Chaos: Cape Cross Is Overwhelmed

Cape Cross seems out of control. Thousands of seals, and far too many are entangled. As our team approaches the colony, the animals begin to flee, but in doing so, they create a massive bottleneck. This chaos becomes our only chance to scan the moving crowd for entangled individuals. We can’t reach every seal, but sometimes, this self-made “chute” lets us spot and catch multiple victims in a matter of seconds. Today was one of those days. Ropes, fishing line, plastic straps, it’s all there, wrapped around necks and cutting into flesh. Some entanglements are fresh, others chronic and life-threatening. And the numbers are staggering. This might be one of our most intense rescue days of the year so far. It’s a sign of our improved skills and strategy, but it is also a reflection of a worsening crisis. Seal entanglements aren’t isolated cases anymore. They’re systemic.
