High above the Cornish coast, St Mawes Castle once stood ready for war.
Built by Henry VIII in the 1540s, this striking cloverleaf-shaped fortress formed part of his Device Forts programme — a string of artillery castles designed to defend England’s shores from invasion by France and Spain.
Together with Pendennis Castle across the water, it guarded the crucial Carrick Roads anchorage at the mouth of the River Fal. With its sea views, carved inscriptions, and still-surviving Tudor gun emplacements, St Mawes Castle is one of the best-preserved examples of coastal defence from the time.
We explore its battlements, towers, and rich military history — and take in a few unforgettable views along the way.
