The discussion centered on whether the Labour government should invoke emergency powers to tackle illegal immigration. During the conversation, Stadlen floated the idea of integrating undocumented migrants into the workforce, suggesting that the vast majority — “99 per cent” — are eager to contribute to British society economically.

“I don’t blame people for wanting a better life or fleeing terrible conditions,” Stadlen explained. “Many of them can’t be sent back because they come from genuinely dangerous regions. But illegal immigration comes in different forms — not just boats. Some people simply overstay their visas.”

However, Akua countered that while hardship is a reality for many migrants, fleeing danger does not automatically equate to legal asylum status. “Most are undocumented, stay for years, and vanish into the system. That is simply unsustainable,” she said.

As the discussion intensified, Akua repeatedly pressed Stadlen to propose a concrete solution. He acknowledged the complexity of the issue, noting that the UK ranks behind Germany and Italy in asylum applications. But Akua quickly dismissed this comparison, arguing that the UK is smaller in size and resources than those nations.

The exchange grew increasingly heated when Stadlen attempted to interject, downplaying the difference between the UK and Italy. Akua firmly told him to “let me finish” several times before bluntly instructing, “Stop talking.”

Despite the fiery disagreement, both acknowledged that the situation demands urgent and effective solutions. Stadlen conceded he doesn’t have all the answers but emphasized that unchecked migration is not a viable option. “I do not want an unlimited number of people coming into this country,” he stated.

Akua closed the segment by stressing the importance of national capacity. “The bottom line is, we need to find a solution. We simply cannot take care of everyone.”
