I'm back with another Husky model for restoration. This NSU Ro80 casting was introduced some time between 1967 when the real car debuted and 1969 when the Husky range was renamed Corgi Juniors. The Husky models were always metallic blue, had chrome hubs and had a clear window transparency. Later Corgi Juniors versions were painted pink, purple, bronze, or white and had black bonnets.
The real NSU Ro80 was miles ahead of its time. It had a Wankel rotary engine, all round disc brakes, fully independent suspension and a host of other features that are still the norm today. But its innovation ultimately led to its demise. The rotary engines were unreliable initially and although the issues were ironed out by 1970, the brand was already tarnished so much so that parent company Volkswagen opted to phase out NSU entirely when the car was discontinued in 1977. Still, over 37,000 Ro80s were built during that ten year span.
My model was a bit dull and scratched, had lost most of its chrome plating from the plastics, and had a cloudy and dirty window piece. The blue I used looks a bit more vibrant than the original shade but I like to think it is more reminiscent of when it was brand new, first torn from its packaging in the late 60s.
