This is my solo trip to Gaumukh. The guide abandoned me and so i had to pursue the trek on my own. Watch this video to see how i managed to reach Gaumukh amidst the landslide and after river crossing and challenging path.

This video includes every detail about Gaumukh trek, on how to reach Gangotri from haridwar and RIshikesh, how to reach Gaumukh from Gangotri, Trek permit, food, accomodation and complete expenses.

GANGOTRI TO GAUMUKH DISTANCE: This is a total distance of 18 km

TIME DURATION : We did this Trek from Gangotri to Gaumukh over 2 days, we stayed overnight at Bhojbasa.

JOURNEY DATES : 1st week of Spectember 2019.

PERMIT PROCESS: You need to apply online for Gaumukh permit using the below weblink. Else you can get the permit the day you arrive at Gangotri from the forest department office which is located right beside the Gangotri bus stand.


Forest department allows the entry through the Gangotri national park at 6AM and not before that.

Application for permit does not mean confirmation of travel on that day, you still need to visit the forest office and get the permission letter approved.
You can do this either at Uttarkashi or Gangotri.

PERMIT CHARGES: NIL
GANGOTRI NATIONAL PARK ENTRY CHARGES : 150/- INR per person.
CAMERA CHARGES : 500/- per camera ( SO make sure to not show off and hide your camera to save money :P )

PONY SERVICE CHARGE: Government approved rate is Rs 1800 per person from Gangotri Forest entry gate to Bhojbasa and back next day.

Though Rs 1800 rate is fixed by government but on an average this costs Rs 2500 because they will charge extra for luggage plus if you are little over over normal weight they will charge extra. Consider this about Rs 2500 per person.

GUIDE CHARGE: Not really required if you are travelling with friends. Guide or a buddy is compulsion to get the permit. The route is very simple and no reason for hiring a guide and you will find lots of fellow trekkers and dharmik people on the way. As i did not had a guide so for me the charge was NIL.

FOOD AVAILABILITY:
Chirbasa: Better to carry some food along with you and you have food stalls at Chirbasa where Maggie, Tea Biscuits and Paratha are served and nominal price.

GMVN Bhojbasa : Vegetarian food is served at Bhojbasa at GMVN and Lal Baba Ashram. The Ashrams serve food free of cost. Food at GMVN is on chargeable basis of approx. 100 per person and they serve tast veg food.

Tea & hot water in morning - served at 5AM at GMVN.

ACOOMODATION BETWEEN GANGOTRI TO GAUMUKH: Only place where you can stay is Bhojbasa, there are 2 options there GMVN & Lal Baba Ashram, you need to do online booking for GMVN. You can also pitch your own tents nearby. GMVN provides dormitory rooms at 400/- per person & Tent Stay at 300/- . There is no place to stay at Gaumukh. Food is served free of cost at Lal baba Ashram. Both are very good place to stay.

Per person stay and food hardly costs 500/- per person.

ELECTRICITY AT BHOJBASA - There is no electricity over there, GMVN guest house has a generator which they run every evening for one and a half hour and you can charge your electronic devices.

MOBILE NETWORK: No Network once you enter the Gangotri national Park.

If there is some emergency, GMVN people liasons with the Army there and communicates wirelessly with Gangotri.

Things to carry: Enough woolens, raincoat, oxygen cylinder, you can get oxygen cylinder from gangotri medical shop by paying Rs 600 and if it is not used they will deduct Rs 100 or 200 and return the balance money. It is not necessary but for older people it is advisable.
